Proverbs 3: 5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
As I reread this scripture (sorry to get all churchified), I can see a “Have Faith?” sticker coming at me, like the religious takeoff of the Have Milk? slogan. Lately, I have seen this cool catchphrase on t-shirts and on bumper stickers and I always immediately think that is what I should be doing. Why don’t I have more faith??? How can I get me some??? Maybe I should get that shirt, so it will transfer the faith to me. I wonder if the guy has it all together as his bumper sticker suggests?
Have Faith?
What do I have faith in or WHO do I have faith in?
The question “Have Faith?” is a good one and the t-shirt is great as it is a good conversation piece. However, its the in what, or rather in WHO that is THE most important (part) as you can have faith in just about ANYTHING these days. There are tons of pop culture faiths that you can get into that tells you to have faith and I have probably read every one.  Have faith in the universal mind. Have faith in the infinite substance. Have faith in yourself.  Have faith in Oprah (isn’t her favorite things episodes amazing?). Have faith in the divine., (I will suspend the list there) and on and on it goes.
Have Faith?
That is a loaded question because… again what do I (you) have faith in??
OK so…I believe that Christ died for my sins and rose for my justification.
…And therefore, the Lord loves Me.
Quick simple and to the point.
oh one more…And the Lord will smite me if I am bad (hey wait a minute…where did that come from??!?!?!).
OK so…
What does all that mean exactly???? I am realizing that its easy to give the textbook (or in this case the biblical answer), but if you really want to “have faith?” you have to keep digging.
Matthew 7:7-8 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
In this “seeking and ye shall find” mode you must geniunely seek the truth and really get a firm foundation as to where whatever faith you believe in comes from. Really delve deep. Otherwise, you may just find that what you have faith in does not exist.
